An oil transformer is a traditional power transformer in which the core and windings are immersed in insulating oil to provide insulation, heat dissipation and arc extinguishing. Insulating oil (usually mineral) not only effectively increases the insulation strength of the transformer, but also, through convection circulation of the oil, transfers the heat generated during operation to the cooling fins or radiator tubes, where it is cooled naturally by air or forced by fans, which ensures stable operation of the transformer.
It is distinguished by high power, low cost, high overload capacity, long insulation life and proven repair technologies, but has limitations such as flammability, the need for regular oil quality control, as well as large weight and dimensions. Oil-filled transformer is currently the most widely used type of transformer in medium and high voltage power transmission and distribution systems, it is especially suitable for converting and distributing high power power in open substations, industrial and mining enterprises, power plants, etc.
